The three major averages posted gains for the fourth week in row, lifted by strong quarterly earnings results for most of the Big Tech companies and a strong jobs report. Coming off a wonderfully surprising stock market global boom of 2023, this year could be anybody's guess. Utility-scale solar projects are growing around the world, and Wall Street firm T.D. There is too much money chasing solar projects, someone has to win. Here's the thinking for 2024: global oil demand is going to grow, but given China's rolling economic pain it may increase by less than some expect. Russia remains robust on global markets despite sanctions, and OPEC may have done most of what it can to keep its member and allies production levels lower to balance out global markets.

After the September meeting pause last week, the target range for the fed funds rate remained at 5.25% to 5.50%. First, I don't know a soul besides me who agrees with that 20-year versus fed funds rate yield prognosis. They think the fed funds rate will come down or the 20-year yield is already extended. Second, I don't know anyone else who believes the economy is so strong that the Fed is correct to keep on an anti-inflation course. I don't think so.

Goldman Sachs said in a research note Thursday the recent energy sector pullback should be viewed as a reason to buy since that strategy has worked well since late 2020. West Texas Intermediate crude and energy stocks have been under intense pressure in recent weeks on the back of heightened recession fears. Based on that criteria, Goldman has Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) on its "Americas Conviction List" with a buy rating. Recognizing the ups-and-downs of owning energy stocks, we still believe they should be part of any diversified portfolio. Falling lumber and natural gas prices are reasons not to fret over inflation, according to David Rosenberg. the veteran economist asked in a Monday tweet, saying it's maybe a problem in the services sector of the US economy. Rosenberg has repeatedly shrugged off inflation concerns as price pressures decline from their mid-2022 highs. US natural gas prices plunged 13% on Monday as a streak of mild winter weather hurt demand. That has seen price pressures ease somewhat in recent months, with the latest reading coming in at 6.4% through January.
You need to know what you think will happen and then you can insert stocks into that worldview. I think this view, which Jay cares and is most likely going to get it right, is fundamental to my worldview. I think that's an absurd tradeoff and those who are making it, those who own 10-year Treasurys, are sorely ill-advised. Fortunately, I don't think the Fed has to go that far to break the trio. The companies you think might not make it I think aren't going to make it because they won't be able to raise cash.
